The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
